A War Was Fought Over a Wooden Bucket
In 1325, the Italian cities of Bologna and Modena went to war after Modenese soldiers stole a simple wooden bucket from a public well. While political tensions had already existed between the rival cities, the stolen bucket became the symbol of the conflict. Thousands of soldiers fought in what became known as the War of the Bucket. The original bucket is still preserved in Modena today as a reminder that history can be surprisingly petty.

King Henry I of England was reportedly warned by his doctors not to eat lampreys, a type of eel that he loved. Ignoring their advice, he ate them anyway while traveling through France in 1135. Soon afterward, he became seriously ill and died. Although historians still debate the exact cause, the story has become one of history’s most famous examples of ignoring medical advice.
A focus on craft
In the early 20th century, parts of Iceland introduced strict restrictions and heavy taxes on dog ownership to reduce the spread of disease. Many residents decided it was easier to keep cats instead. Over time, cats became incredibly common in Icelandic towns, giving the country its reputation as one of Europe’s most cat-friendly places. The policy unintentionally changed the nation’s pet culture for generations.
Built in the open
In 1672, political unrest in the Netherlands reached a horrifying peak when Prime Minister Johan de Witt and his brother Cornelis were attacked by an angry mob. After they were killed, eyewitness accounts suggest that members of the crowd mutilated and even ate parts of their bodies. Historians still debate how widespread the cannibalism was, but the event remains one of the darkest and strangest moments in Dutch history.
